What?! I've only survived 2 weeks of school?! It seemed like forever. Imagine taking the same subject EVERYDAY. I'm like a chicken hung upside down, and everyday, one fat woman with a mole oh the tip of her nose will come and pluck my feather. Some at a time, slow torture.
Seriously, the new system didn't turn out far from what I had predicted. It is Bad, with a capital B. Just for the first week, we've covered flash. COMPLETELY. WTF? In the past, it would've taken us 4 weeks to master that program, MASTER, mark my word. Not just briefly touch it and them move on to another chapter.
Compare this: You walk into a class, the lecturer teaches you something new that day. He gives you an assignment and expects you to hand it in tomorrow. You went home dead tired, you rushed the work with a get-it-done-and-over-with attitude and submits the next day.
With this: You walk into a class, the lecturer teaches you one portion of the chapter, he gives you a simple assignment and expects it back next week. Within that week, you did his work, everyday opening the file to see where you can improve on. And also, you found time to explore other components of the software. You decided to try making something that was not taught in class.
YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE!?
Block teaching IS (M+B)(ad). Do your mathematics kid.
Another example: On just the second week of school, you learn to do traditional animation. Yes, those thick chunks of paper which you stack together then flip it so that your character comes to life. You lecturer gives you an impossible task. He wants a short animation done by the end of the 2nd week. Guess what, you only have 3 more nights and 2 more days to finish that. Some kind soul in that particular class stood up and protest. The lecturer agreed to extend the dateline to the following Monday. You feel relieved.
The next day, you go to class, the lecturer already started on how to draw in betweens. You sat there, stunned. He suddenly say that he wants to bring the class to an animation studio the next day. The same kind soul asks for another extension. He extends it to the friday next week. You rejoiced.
You know that your work won't have any colour and wont be scanned into the com for animating.
Now see the scenerio without block teaching: On the second day of school, the lecturer walks around and check on your FLASH assignment. Animating a ball from left to right then back again. You remembered his animation includes some squashing and stretching of the image. So at home you secretly explored and suceeded. You showed the lecturer, he was overjoyed. Whats more, your image comes with a background, shadow and texture.
And many weeks past, we learned MORE about flash.
on week 8, when you come back from your one week break. you started doing traditional animation. The final assignment of that subject starts today. You start planning, over the weeks, you learned much more about animation (as compared to block teaching). And also, you get better idea over the weeks, replacing the last idea. You get more inspirations, you produce better work.
In the meantime, you learn how to ink and colour your animations.
You learned how to scanned in your pictures and piece them together to form an animation rather than flip the stack of paper.
On the 15th week, you presented your work. You lecturer was so touched by your effort and work that he almost cried.
I don't know how other design students see this block teaching. But personally I think it's not as good as it's supposed to be.
Don't say things like "instead of wasting your time to blog and photoshop your pictures, you can use it wisely and do your work."
Cos if that's logical to you. Does it mean I can also give up sleep and meals just so that I can finish the work?
"But blogging and photoshopping is not compulsory."
Yes I know, what makes you think I've not completed my work? Im just practicing typing speed, english (poor grammar esp), my photoshopping skills and so on. So shut up.
Look at the pathetic Ol me, why is there a plaster on your nose ar?

Because....

erm...

AIYA I GOT ONE BIG PIMPLE SCAR ON THE NOSE THAT DAY LA.
"it will make the pimple worse"
Guess what? I've been told already.
