The Arrival
The twins arrived at Marykate's home for the orphaned together with the servant of their family, Tanno. It was raining cats and dogs, dark clouds covered the sky and lightning flashed every now and then. Jeri, elder of the two, wore a smart, white shirt with a black tie too big for him. Also a black, short, pants to go along with his shiny shoes. His twin sister, Jeci, wore a black dress and a cute, black blouse decorated with pretty laces. Her hair tied up with two white ribbons. The two seven years old held each other's hand tightly, nervously looking straight into the dark and creepy doorway ahead. Tanno was holding a large black umbrella in one hand and a file in the other. He was considered well clothed for a servant, but that was hidden under his dark raincoat.
"Oh! what adorable little children!" exclaimed an agely woman. She was dressed in faint baby pink, from head to toe, and looked like she could use a little sleep. She smiled delightedly at the twins, who did not seem to bother about the old lady.
"Indeed they are, and are you Mrs Kary? I called the home the other day." Tanno's voice came out shakily. He was cold and shivering in the storm.
The old lady nodded, the smile wiped from her seriously wrinkled face. She calmed herself and invited the trio in. Once inside, all three started wiping themselves dry with the towel Mrs Kary handed them. She took a closer look at the twins. They looked the same, other than their hair and clothes, and they got the same beautiful round eyes like little dolls. She turned around and faced Tanno, who was still drying himself.
"Mr Tanno yes? Will you please come with me to the studies?" Mrs Kary looked serious. She waved to a young caretaker at the other end of the corridor. "Nurse Sona, sorry to trouble you, but please take the children up to the room. I got work to do." The old lady put both hands together as if she was begging for the nurse's aid. Nodding, the young nurse agreed. She wore a light blue uniform and a cap with a pink cross at the front, which little Jeci found interest in.
Tanno agreed, he followed the head nurse to the room not far from where they were. It was rather simple, a table, some chairs, and one shelf with some files and books. Budget, Tanno thought quietly as he sat down on the creaking chair, worried that his weight might destroy the fragile furniture. Mrs Kary put on her thick glasses and took out a form from the old drawer of the table.
"What's their name?" She asked politely.
"Jeri Reu and Jeci Reu." Tanno answered while still scanning the room ceiling to walls.
"How did their parents..." The old lady's words were cut off. She did not continue, but Tanno knows the question that was to be asked.
"Carriage fell off the hills, instant death." Tanno replied, his eyes reduced to thin lines. Afterall, he has worked his entire life for the Reus. He looked out of the window into the gloomy weather, thinking back at the happy moments the family once enjoyed...
They were wealthy, lived in a mansion that looks like a castle. There was a golden fountain at the front gate, of angels dancing beneath a big golden bowl that let water trickle down the sides. The mansion had many rooms, each with it's own balcony and silk curtains. It was seated on the top of a lush, green hill and it overlooks a river which little sheeps drink from. It was a home fit for a king indeed. They also owned the most luxurious carriage, powered by four royal, white horses which manes shine under the orange sunlight. They lived happily, with no worries nor woes.
"Mr Tanno?" The servant was startled by Mrs Kary's voice. He rubbed the bridge of his nose and gazed at the old lady. "I think that's all i need, and i hope to see you come back visit the children frequently yes?" She asked, almost desperate. Tanno nodded, biting his lips. He handed the file over. It contained the wealth of the Reus, which was to be passed to the twins when they mature. Slowly he left the room.
Tanno bid farewell to his young master and mistress, the two of them looked at Tanno sadly. He was like a member of their family, and now, he is leaving as well. The twins held tight in their hands, but neither of them teared, Mrs Kary watched on surprised. All her years in the home, she had seen every child cry the moment they were forced to separate from the one who brought them here, but not this time. She wondered why. The carriage rode off into the distance, the dead trees by the road seemed like ghostly fingers in the heavy downpour. The twins remained emotionless. After that, they went back to their room hand in hand, still not spoken a word till now.
Thinking Back
Weeks, months and years had passed since the arrival of the twins. They did not mix well with the other kids, and the two of them were always together alone. Nobody knows why, even when asked, they did not answer. However they did speak a little, yes, a little was all. Mrs Kary looked at the ticking clock hanging on the grey wall, it was evening 5:15. The children were playing at the little playground outside the home. She gazed out of the door and saw Jeri and Jeci sitting under a tree, which was dried and leafless. They were older now, taller, but still same height, fourteen. Mrs Kary thought back at the many incidents which involved the twins...
"Give me that you loner!" The little girl cried into Jeci's ears. She wanted the doll from Jeci, a rugged doll with buttons as eyes and cotton sticking out of it's left arm. Jeci stared hard at the girl, holding on tight to the doll. She would not care for such things in the past, she had expensive porcelain dolls with their own dollhouse each. Now she was reduced to fighting for a damaged doll with an uncouth girl.
Suddenly, The girl held up her hand, ready to slap Jeci hard on the face anytime. Jeri cut in, out of nowhere, he held the girl's hand effortlessly. The twins watched the girl in unison for a long time, Jeri's hand still clutched to the girl's arm. Very soon, the girl broke into tears. She cried and cried, it got louder and louder until the whole home shook. Well, almost. Many nurses came over to pull the two apart. Jeri and the girl that is. The girl ended with scratch marks on her arm, bleeding. But neither of the twins had scratched her, instead the doll had thorns and needles all over. They seemed came from within the doll and they tore the cloth of the rugged doll, just the way the little girl was hurt. It was like a voodoo doll or something.
Mrs Kary wiped her face a little, clearing her thoughts, she continued looking out at the children. But mostly focusing on the twins, who were now moving to another part of the space. She noticed how united the siblings stood even till now. They were intelligent for their age and they carried themselves like grown ups. The old lady rubbed her hands intensely as she thought of another past, turning away from the door...
The boys were playing at the basketball court, it was bright but not too sunny, a good weather for any outdoor sports. Jeri was bouncing the ball all by himself, standing in the middle of the court. The beat of the ball hitting the ground was constant.
"Tat...tat...tat" Jeri repeated that for quite some time, vision not leaving the orange sphere. All of a sudden, Kare, the home's biggest bully appeared and snatched the ball from Jeri. Jeri turned, he did not shout nor did he wail. He watched on as Kare ran around bouncing the ball. Kare was two years older than Jeri, he was big sized for his age but really dumb. Kare continued, tossing the ball at the basket, some went in while some did not. However, all this time, Jeri stood in the middle of the court like a stone statue. Motionless and calm, the only movement was his beautiful green eyes which followed Kare everywhere he went.
Kare threw the ball high up in the air, once, twice. But the third time, the ball did not come back down. It floated in the air like a balloon. Jeri did nothing, he was still standing there still as a mountain. Kare jumped a little, trying to grab the ball. Did not work. Just then, almost instantly, the ball zoomed down at Kare like a falling meteor. It hit him hard on the head and he fell to the ground. Not to the extent of unconsiousness though. The ball rolled back to the feet of Jeri. He bent down and picked it up, from there he carried on bouncing the ball as if nothing had happened. Not moving forward to see if Kare was all right. Kare was groaning, calling out in pain, hands held tight to his head.
The nurses came shortly and brought Kare in, Jeri, one the other hand was brought to see Mrs Kary."So, Jeri, what happened?" Mrs Kary waited, although she was sure she was not going to get any response. She leaned back against the same old arm chair and crossed her arms, almost certain that Jeri injured Kare. Jeri stood still, eyes fixed on the wooden floor. He did not answer, his hands were behind him and he looked stable. Mrs Kary repeated the question several times, until finally she was worn out. Her old body could no longer take such stress and she looked to the creaking door. Jeci was standing there, her hands too, were behind her and she looked into the floor like Jeri. Their actions were identical, like replica. The old lady gave up and let Jeri join the rest, once outside, the twins held their hands again.
A sudden uproar at the playground brought the old lady back to the present. Holding her cane in her hand, Mrs Kary went to her room upstairs, she laid in bed and looked up at the ceiling. The children were still playing downstairs, she could still hear their rowd and the beautiful chirping of the birds outside. Till now, nobody had come to adopt the twins yet. Nobody took fancy to them despite their beautiful faces, as she thought on the old lady fell asleep.
